Local school boards honour veterans and pray for peace on Remembrance Day

Students and staff across the region paused Monday to remember the sacrifices of Canada’s veterans and reflect on the importance of peace.

At St. Clair Catholic District School Board, flags at all schools and offices were lowered to half-mast in honour of Remembrance Day.

“Each year, our school communities pause to honour and reflect upon the sacrifices of the brave women and men of Canada’s Armed Forces who have served the cause of freedom in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions around the world,” the board said in a statement.

“We give thanks to God for their service to our country and their commitment to world peace, as we pray for His blessings of comfort for their families.”

The board also shared a Prayer for Peace, which read in part:

“God of All,
We know you are a God of justice, truth, and love.
Today we offer our prayers for peace in our world,
to remember those still engulfed in war-torn situations,
and to remember those who fought and died in wars.
Keep us responsible in seeking and promoting peace
for the world and all its peoples.”

At the Lambton Kent District School Board, schools also held ceremonies and activities to honour veterans.

“Today, every school within the Lambton Kent District School Board pauses to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who gave everything so that we may live in freedom,” the board said in a statement.

“Across our board, students and staff are observing this day through assemblies, performances, moments of silence, lesson plans, activities, and videos—each a meaningful tribute to the significance of November 11.”

The board said Remembrance Day is “more than a tradition; it is a solemn promise to never forget.”

“By teaching about and observing this day, we ensure that future generations understand the cost of peace and the importance of gratitude,” the statement said. “These acts of remembrance help us reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the responsibility we share to uphold them.”

“We extend our deepest thanks to the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” the board added. “Their legacy lives on in our classrooms, in our communities, and in the hearts of Canadians. Lest we forget.”
