Wallaceburg students explore skilled trades through Skills Ontario technology truck

Students in Grades 7 and 8 from the three St. Clair Catholic schools in Wallaceburg recently had the chance to explore skilled trades and technology through the Skills Ontario technology truck and a series of STEM activities at the Catholic Education Centre.

In addition to touring the technology trailer, students participated in hands-on science, technology, engineering and math activities in the Ursuline Boardroom and the St. Louis Room at the CEC.

“The Skills Ontario truck and STEM activities provide a rich opportunity for our intermediate students to engage in hands-on learning in pathways they may not have previously experienced or considered,” said Lisa Demers, director of education.

The Ontario government has invested $5 million in developing three technology trailers that travel across the province to schools, career fairs and First Nations communities to promote the skilled trades. The trailers feature simulators that allow students to experience trades such as heavy equipment operation, welding, plumbing, electrical work, hairdressing and cake decorating.

“This equipment is very realistic and offers kids a hands-on opportunity to try out a wide range of tech fields,” said Jessie Fram, Skills Ontario Trades and Tech Truck program facilitator. “It shows students there are many opportunities and pathways that lead directly to the world of work following high school.”

Fram added that the trucks have proven so popular that two additional trailers are expected to hit the road early in the new year.
