Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A woman and her children are safe after a domestic incident on Lakeshore Road prompted a heavy police response Thursday morning.
Police were called around 7:47 a.m. after a child ran to a neighbour’s home for help and a 911 call reported an intimate partner violence incident in progress. Patrol officers arrived and brought the woman and her children out of the home. The woman had visible facial injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene. The children were not hurt.
The man involved refused to leave the residence, prompting police to call in the Sarnia Police Emergency Response Team, along with K9 officers, crisis negotiators and a critical incident commander. A mobile command post was also set up.
Negotiators made contact and the man surrendered without incident at 9:58 a.m. He has been held for bail on several charges, including multiple counts of assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and breaching a release order. Police say more charges may follow.
The Criminal Investigations Division has taken over the case and officers remain at the scene as a search warrant is executed. Names and identifying details are being withheld to protect the victims. Lakeshore Road has reopened.
Police encourage anyone experiencing intimate partner violence to seek help. Emergencies should be reported to 911. For non-emergencies, contact Sarnia police at 519-344-8861. Community supports are available through the Women’s Interval Home, The Centre Sarnia-Lambton, Victim Services and Réseau Femmes.
