Man charged after waving handgun at motorists in Harwich Township

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 20-year-old Blenheim man is facing several charges after police say he waved and pointed a handgun at motorists on Communication Road Friday morning.

Police were called around 9:30 a.m. after reports of a driver operating dangerously while brandishing what appeared to be a firearm. Officers located the vehicle near Communication Road and Fairview Line, where the driver attempted to flee. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted.

After several minutes of communication, the man exited the vehicle and was arrested without injury. Police say a search of the vehicle turned up a Glock-style BB gun.

The man was taken to police headquarters, where he became assaultive and spat on an officer. He has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, dangerous operation, failing to comply with an undertaking, assaulting a peace officer, mischief under $5,000, theft under $5,000 in connection with a separate fuel-theft investigation, and possession under $5,000.

He was transported to the South West Detention Centre and remains in custody pending a video court appearance on Dec. 2.
