The Walpole Island Police Service is reminding motorists that pulling over for emergency vehicles is not only a courtesy but a legal requirement that can help save lives.
Police say when drivers see flashing lights or hear sirens from an ambulance, fire truck or police vehicle, they must safely move to the right side of the road and stop to allow responders to pass. Officers stress that emergency crews are often racing against time to reach heart attack victims, structure fires, serious collisions or violent incidents in progress, and even brief delays caused by traffic can have life-or-death consequences.
By pulling over and stopping, drivers help clear a path so responders can reach their destination as quickly as possible. Police also note that this simple action helps protect emergency personnel who are already working in high-risk situations on the road and at emergency scenes.
The Walpole Island Police Service is encouraging all drivers to stay alert, react promptly and do their part to keep roads safe for both the public and first responders.
