Man arrested after incident at Sarnia police facility

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 37-year-old man was taken into custody after entering a restricted area of the Sarnia Police Service headquarters and resisting arrest on Friday afternoon.

Police say that on January 2, 2026, at approximately 11:55 a.m., a man walked into the employee-only parking lot at the rear of the Sarnia Police Service facility. The area is clearly marked as non-public and is used by both civilian employees and police officers as they report to and from work.

An off-duty officer arriving at the station was confronted by the man near the employee entrance. Due to the man’s erratic behaviour, the officer remained with him until on-duty officers arrived.

Uniformed officers engaged the man in extended communication, during which he continued to display unusual behaviour, including sudden and exaggerated movements that police believe may have been influenced by the consumption of an unknown substance. Officers later learned the man was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.

When officers attempted to take him into custody, the man physically resisted by refusing to free his hands and failing to comply with police commands. Additional officers were called to assist, and multiple officers were required to safely subdue and secure him.

Police say the man continued to resist even after being handcuffed as he was escorted into the station. Once inside the custody area, officers discovered he was in possession of a knife.

The man was held for bail on multiple charges, including failing to comply with a probation order, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and obstructing a peace officer. Following a bail hearing, he was remanded into custody.

Sarnia police noted the man has had numerous interactions with officers since January 2025, including multiple arrests and charges.
