Charges laid after stabbing at Sarnia residence

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Police say charges have been laid following a stabbing at a Sarnia residence earlier this month that left one man critically injured.

Sarnia Police Service responded in the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, to a residence in the 300 block of Somerset Crescent. Officers located an adult male suffering from a serious stab wound to his upper leg. A second adult male also sustained a laceration to his forearm during the incident. Both were transported to hospital for treatment.

Police say the first victim required emergency surgery and was admitted to critical care, though his injuries are no longer considered life-threatening. The second victim was treated and released from hospital after receiving stitches.

Following the initial police response, investigators determined the suspect had concealed himself on the property of a nearby residence and was observing police activity at the scene. Officers were alerted by a neighbouring resident who reported seeing a man hiding behind a vehicle in a suspicious manner.

During a search of the area, police located and seized a knife believed to have been used in the assault.

As a result of the investigation, a 26-year-old Stratford, Ont., resident has been charged with multiple Criminal Code offences, including aggravated assault and several related assault and weapons charges. Following a bail hearing, the accused was remanded into custody.

Police note that charges are laid based on the evidence available and the legal elements required for each offence. Investigators must consider factors such as intent and opportunity when determining appropriate charges, and additional or different charges may be laid as the investigation continues.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact Sarnia police or Crime Stoppers.
