Walpole Island First Nation to recruit members for new police board

Walpole Island First Nation is preparing to recruit members for its new Police Service Board as the community moves toward a self-administered police service. The board will be appointed by the First Nation Council and will oversee governance and accountability for the new police detachment once it is established.

Officials say a call for applications will be issued soon. Board members will be selected by a committee rather than elected, and they will receive training in police board procedures and work closely with the police chief during the detachment’s setup.

The board is expected to navigate challenges including limited resources, underfunding, and legislative barriers. Community members interested in governance or policing careers, including officer and civilian roles, are encouraged to apply when the recruitment opens.

While the exact timeline for establishing the board is not set, officials are aiming for six months or less and will provide regular updates to keep the community informed.
