Rain and melting snow expected to raise water levels across SCRCA watershed

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is warning watershed municipal flood coordinators that warmer weather and significant rainfall over the coming days are expected to raise water levels in local rivers and streams.

In a message issued to municipal flood coordinators, the authority said, “Warmer weather and rain over the next several days will cause water levels in local rivers and streams to rise.”

A weather system moving through the area is expected to remain in place for most of the week, bringing between 20 and 35 millimetres of rain along with above-freezing temperatures. Most of the rainfall is forecast for late Tuesday and throughout Wednesday.

The authority noted there is still a substantial amount of frozen water contained in the existing snowpack and that the ground is already saturated, limiting its ability to absorb additional precipitation. As a result, rainfall and melting snow are expected to run off quickly into local watercourses.

“Water is expected to overflow into low-lying areas that usually flood in the spring. High water levels will likely last through next week,” the message said.

Municipal staff are being advised to monitor local conditions closely, particularly in known drainage problem areas. The authority warned that drifting snow in many rural areas may have filled ditches and smaller watercourses, potentially blocking drainage during runoff events and increasing the risk of flooding.

Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas because of dangerous conditions, including slippery banks, unsafe ice cover and cold, fast-moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.

The conservation authority said it will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media if flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents are also being urged to keep a close watch on local conditions.

The message remains in effect until 12 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, unless otherwise updated.
