Elderly driver to be charged after SUV strikes building

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: An elderly driver is expected to be charged with careless driving after an SUV collided with a building Saturday evening.

Police said officers were called Feb. 14, 2026, at about 5:43 p.m. to a report of a crash involving a sport utility vehicle and a structure. No injuries were reported, including to the driver or anyone else.

Initial investigation indicates the collision was likely the result of the driver accidentally pressing the accelerator instead of the brake, police said.

The driver is expected to face a charge of careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. Because the charge will be laid under Part I of the Provincial Offences Act, meaning it will proceed by way of a ticket rather than a summons to court, the driver’s name cannot be released.

Police noted that amendments under the Safer Streets Stronger Communities Act, enacted Dec. 4, 2024, include changes to the Highway Traffic Act that permit careless driving charges to be laid for incidents occurring in parking lots.
