TBT: Kenneth Strath Moore, the first Indigenous person to represent Canada at the Winter Olympics

Walpole Island First Nation shared this post on social media as the Olympics goy underway earlier this month:

Here is what they had to say:

“As the 2026 Winter Olympics commence, we we are reminded of Kenneth Strath Moore, (born 17 February 1910; died 8 December 1981) of Peepeekisis Cree Nation. Moore was the first Indigenous person to represent Canada at the Winter Olympics where he played on the Men’s Hockey Team, and the first Indigenous person in Canada to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.

A reminder that anything is possible and that our ancestors broke down barriers so that we can be recognized and compete on the World Stage today.

Chi-Miigwech Kenneth Strath Moore.”
