Driver charged after alleged impaired crash and fleeing scene

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 49-year-old Sarnia man is facing multiple charges after a two-vehicle collision in the city’s north end, where one driver allegedly fled the scene.

Police say officers were called at about 6:51 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2026, to a collision in the 900 block of the northbound lanes of Murphy Road. Callers reported one of the drivers appeared to be stumbling and possibly had been drinking.

Officers arrived minutes later and observed heavy front-end damage to both vehicles. One driver remained at the scene and was not injured. Witnesses told police the other driver, who had been operating a Chevrolet pickup truck, fled on foot through a nearby parking lot.

Police set up containment in the area and began a search, assisted by a police service dog.

At about 9:15 p.m., officers received information that a man had taken a taxi to the 100 block of Front Street. Police attended a nearby establishment and located a suspect inside, who was arrested.

Police say the accused later provided two breath samples registering 122 and 126 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, above the legal limit of 80.

Investigators also determined the accused was already before the courts on an impaired driving charge from July 2025.

The accused has been charged with failure to stop after an accident, operation while impaired and operation while impaired (over 80). He was released on an undertaking.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, the vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.
