The Sarnia Police Service Board has announced contract extensions for the leadership team of the Sarnia Police Service, including Chief Derek Davis and deputy chiefs Ron Hansen and Michael Van Sickle.
Chief Derek Davis, who has led the service since May 2022, has had his contract extended to 2032. The board said Davis brought extensive experience and a record of leadership and innovation to the role, along with private-sector expertise in public safety analytics.
Since his appointment, the service has undergone what the board described as significant modernization, including improvements in operational effectiveness, evidence-based decision-making and transparency. The board said Davis has helped foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the organization.
Deputy Chief Ron Hansen, who joined the service in 2024 to oversee criminal investigations, has had his contract extended to the end of 2029. The board said Hansen brought experience in complex, multi-jurisdictional cases and has introduced new technical and investigative capabilities within the Criminal Investigation Division.
Deputy Chief Michael Van Sickle, a longtime member of the service, has had his contract extended to 2034. The board credited him with leading several initiatives, including the introduction of a Police Dog Unit, securing a Tactical Team designation for the Emergency Response Team and improving processes in records and communications. His work on overhauling evidence storage also earned the service international recognition.
“The SPS has been through a tremendous period of positive change, but our work is not done. The decision to extend these contracts reflects the Police Service Board’s strong confidence in this executive team, and the need to ensure continuity of leadership over a longer term within the SPS. With the support of our Board, this leadership team has advanced the implementation of innovative strategies that have strengthened our service delivery and organizational effectiveness. We are pleased that Chief Davis and Deputies Hansen and Van Sickle have extended their commitment to the well-being and safety of our community,” said board chair Kelly Ash.
