Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Police say they have recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the killing of Dane Nisbet and have arrested two additional people as part of an ongoing homicide investigation.
In an update issued April 12, the Sarnia Police Service said investigators continue to search for Kyaw “Chin” Doe while also working to locate the murder weapon.
Police said that in the early morning hours of April 12, homicide investigators obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 300 block of Indian Road. At about 7 a.m., the service’s Emergency Response Team, supported by patrol officers, executed the warrant and arrested a female at the scene. Investigators said the woman was one of two females who had been with the suspects on the night of the shooting.
Following that search, officers attended a hotel on Venetian Avenue in Point Edward, where, acting under exigent circumstances to prevent the loss of critical evidence, the Emergency Response Team entered a unit and detained a male occupant found inside.
Police said a subsequent search warrant was obtained and executed at that location, where investigators located and seized a firearm believed to have been used in Nisbet’s killing. The handgun is pending expert forensic examination but is believed to have originated in the United States and is not registered in Canada.
As a result of the investigation, police said Ava-Leigh Lightheart, 19, was arrested and held for bail on multiple charges, including accessory after the fact to murder and several firearm-related offences. Following a bail hearing, she was remanded into custody.
Johnathan Osborne-Walsh, 19, of Sarnia, was also arrested and held for bail on charges including accessory after the fact to murder and multiple firearm-related offences. He is scheduled to appear in Sarnia bail court on April 13.
Police said they will hold a media conference on April 13 at 10:30 a.m. at police headquarters on Christina Street North to provide further updates.
“As his family, friends, and our community continue to mourn the loss of Dane Nisbet, we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy,” Chief Derek Davis, Sarnia Police Service, stated.
“The Sarnia Police will remain focused on supporting those left behind, while relentlessly pursuing swift justice for all those responsible for his death.”
Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Sarnia Police Service or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing, including efforts to locate Doe.
