Shelter-in-place issued temporarily during domestic incident in Sarnia

Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Police say a man is in custody following an intimate partner violence investigation that prompted a shelter-in-place advisory in a residential neighbourhood Saturday evening.

Officers were called at 5:05 p.m. on April 18, 2026, to the Five Corners area on Mitton Street South after receiving a report that a man inside a home was causing a disturbance while in possession of a firearm.

Police said the initial caller was able to safely leave the residence before officers arrived. As authorities secured the area, a shelter-in-place advisory was issued to nearby homes.

The Sarnia Police Service deployed its Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiator Team, canine unit and Criminal Investigations Division to the scene. Negotiators established communication with the suspect, who confirmed he had a real firearm.

After approximately one hour of negotiations, the Crisis Negotiator Team, working in coordination with the Emergency Response Team, successfully negotiated the suspect’s safe arrest. The shelter-in-place advisory was then lifted. No injuries were reported.

Police said a search warrant was later executed at the residence, resulting in the seizure of firearms.

A Sarnia man was held for bail on multiple charges, including uttering threats, possession of a dangerous weapon, careless storage, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition and knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Police said the accused’s name is being withheld because the incident stems from an intimate partner violence investigation and is intended to protect the identity of the victim.
