From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
Are you someone who appreciates good, sound advice?
I suppose that anyone with even a drop of common sense would have to say ‘yes’ to that question.
There are plenty of people in this world seeking to make a name for themselves spouting all sorts of advice via social media outlets.
Opinions are a dime a dozen, it seems, yet who can we trust in the search for sound advice?
The Scriptures give us our answer in Psalm 37:30-31: “The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.”
Wise words coming from our mouths are preceded by putting the wisdom of God’s Word into our hearts.
I saw this happen a number of years ago when I was involved in a debate at our church about the problem of black marks on our gym floor from kids coming to our youth group.
Some people felt we should ban kids from coming if they didn’t wear different shoes.
A wise lady then spoke up and said, “I think we’re worrying about the wrong kind of soles (souls).”
That statement was a complete mic drop moment and the matter never came up again.
We did the right thing and chose to clean up the black marks off the gym floor, rather than to turn kids away.
My late father-in-law was a man who taught me so much about being a good pastor and living right.
He was also a man who spent much time in his Bible, filling his heart with the wisdom of God.
I don’t know about you, but I sure want to have a righteous mouth and not fall prey to spouting the platitudes of fools!
It all starts with what I put into my heart.
