Walpole Island First Nation says a team of Ontario Provincial Police investigators will be working in the community beginning May 13 as part of historical investigations.
In a community notice issued May 7, Chief and Council said the investigators will focus on reviewing and advancing “a number of historical occurrences that are incomplete.”
The notice said the team consists of investigators with specialized training and that they will use “a trauma-informed, victim-centred approach throughout this process.”
“As part of their work, they may be conducting follow-up inquiries and, in some cases, may need to speak with community members,” the notice stated.
Chief and Council said the initiative is intended to ensure “outstanding historical matters are addressed in a respectful, professional, and compassionate manner.”
“We appreciate the community’s understanding and cooperation while this work is carried out,” the notice stated.
Community members with questions or concerns are encouraged to reach out to Walpole Island First Nation Chief and Council.
