Sarnia Police Service officials allege: A 48-year-old Sarnia man is facing an attempted murder charge following a police investigation into allegations of criminal harassment, breaches of court-ordered conditions and a residential break-in.
The Sarnia Police Service said the investigation began after what it described as a pattern of harassment and unwanted communication that started earlier this year.
Police said the man had previously been arrested on May 11 on allegations of criminal harassment and harassing communications. Following that arrest, he was subject to conditions prohibiting any contact with the complainant and barring him from attending locations associated with the person.
Investigators allege the man continued attempts to communicate with and monitor the complainant despite those conditions.
On June 13, officers responded to a report of a break-and-enter at a residence and found the accused inside the home, police said. He was taken into custody.
As the investigation continued, police said additional evidence, including online communications and items seized at the scene, led to the escalation of the charges to include attempted murder.
The man has been charged with attempted murder, break and enter to commit an indictable offence, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, two counts of criminal harassment and harassing communications.
He was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.
Police are asking anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the Sarnia Police Service at 519-344-8861. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS.
The allegations have not been tested in court.
