Heat warning
A long-duration heat event continues across the region, with the hottest conditions expected to persist through Friday before easing on Saturday. Daytime highs of 32 to 35 C are forecast, while overnight temperatures will only drop to 20 to 22 C, providing little relief from the heat. Environment Canada says confidence in the forecast remains very high.
The combination of heat and humidity could also lead to deteriorating air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index potentially reaching the high-risk category. Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and seek air-conditioned or cooler public spaces if needed.
People are encouraged to check on older adults, those living alone and others at greater risk of heat-related illness. Early signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and extreme fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone experiencing symptoms such as confusion, loss of consciousness or hot, red skin should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911. Environment Canada also reminds residents never to leave children, pets or anyone else inside a parked vehicle.
