Huron Shores Area Transit will raise the price of its monthly pass from $140 to $160 effective Sept. 1, part of what the transit service describes as its ongoing commitment to maintaining a financially sustainable rural transit system while continuing to provide affordable transportation throughout the region.
Since launching, HSAT has expanded service, introduced new routes and seasonal offerings, improved bus stop infrastructure and increased service frequency to better meet the needs of residents, workers, students and visitors. The transit service said rising operating costs make periodic fare adjustments necessary to support the long-term sustainability of the system.
HSAT said the monthly pass continues to offer strong value for regular riders even with the increase. Passengers making two long-distance return trips each week would pay $192 in regular fares over a four-week month, compared with $160 for the monthly pass, a savings of $32, or 16.7 per cent. The transit service said passengers making frequent local trips will also continue to see significant savings compared with paying individual fares, and that its monthly pass remains one of the most affordable among comparable rural transit systems in Ontario.
HSAT said it continues to offer more service than many comparable rural transit systems, operating seven days a week, including weekends and statutory holidays, with more service hours per day than similar systems. The service connects communities throughout Lambton Shores, Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, South Huron, Bluewater, Plympton-Wyoming, Sarnia, London and Goderich.
