The apostle Paul said this in 1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
Notice that he said the love of money, and not money itself.
Wise old Solomon (oh, and he was filthy rich, too!) said this about money in Ecclesiastes 5:10-12: “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? The sleep of a labourer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep.”
Again, folks, the issue here is not money.
It is the attitude we have towards it.
Our affections need to be on God and others, not on material things.
Our society makes much of people with wealth, especially professional athletes and Hollywood icons.
When baseball outfielder, Dave Parker, signed a 5-year contract in 1978 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he became Major League Baseball’s first “million-dollar man.”
Today that amount is chump change.
The love of money has ruined professional baseball, not to mention other professional sports.
Money does matter, and how we approach it will make all the difference whether we have money, or money has us!
