The Canadian Coast Guard’s Inshore Rescue Boat station at Corunna on the St. Clair River will close for the season on September 9, while the station at Mitchell’s Bay on Lake St. Clair will remain open on a reduced weekend schedule into the fall.
The Corunna station is among five Inshore Rescue Boat stations across Ontario, including locations at Britt and MacTier on Georgian Bay, Hill Island on the St. Lawrence River and Long Point on Lake Erie, all closing on September 9.
The Mitchell’s Bay station will continue operating on weekends, from 2 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday, before closing for the season on October 12.
The Inshore Rescue Boat program employs and trains post-secondary students across Canada to provide additional maritime search and rescue services during the busy summer season.
The Canadian Coast Guard’s regular Search and Rescue stations across Ontario will remain in service until December, and Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers and their vessels will continue to be available to help boaters in distress.
