The Sarnia Police Service continues to investigate the unsolved homicide of Morag Davies, whose life was taken nearly four decades ago.
Davies, originally from Scotland, was a real estate agent with Canada Trust Realty at the time of her death. Before that, she worked as a nurse in the emergency department at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sarnia.
On Aug. 25, 1988, Davies was found murdered in her Retlaw Drive residence in Sarnia. She had moved to Retlaw Drive about a month before her death from her previous address at 501 Errol Road West. Investigators determined she was stabbed to death. Despite extensive investigative efforts over the years, the person or persons responsible have never been identified.
Police say the case remains open, as with all unsolved homicides, until the killer is identified. Investigators have pursued many leads over the years, but none have led to an identification.
“Someone in Sarnia is harbouring the truth in silence,” said Davies’ sister, Sandra. “The person responsible may be dead now, but we still need to know why. Why Morag? Not knowing is unbearable.”
Sandra described her sister as “a truly kind, thoughtful and gentle soul” who was highly respected in both her nursing and real estate careers and “loved by everyone who knew her.” She said Davies had been planning to return to Scotland at the time of her death.
“That day changed our lives forever. The pain and horror of what happened to Morag never goes away,” Sandra said. “I don’t just grieve Morag. I grieve the future I imagined with her.”
Police say witnesses and the person or persons responsible are now significantly older than they were in 1988, and investigators remain hopeful the passage of time may encourage someone with knowledge of the case to come forward.
“Please come forward and don’t let Morag become another cold case statistic,” Sandra said. “Someone may know something but may have been too afraid to come forward at the time. It’s never too late.”
