In 1987, the governments of Canada and the United States identified the St. Clair River as an Area of Concern due to severe water quality degradation from industrial and urban development. For more than 30 years, the local community, First Nation communities, government and industry have worked together to restore water quality and aquatic habitat, moving the river toward removal from the list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern.
