Misguided value

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Jesus taught a very simple, yet powerful, principle in Matthew 6:24: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

In other words, we tend to spend money on what we deem to be valuable.

Back in early July of this year there was a big, famous wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Recording artist, Taylor Swift was tying the knot with Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce.

Of course, only a select number of guests could be invited leaving most Swiftie fans out in the cold.

A New York City website posted the following message after several pieces of garbage were collected and housed in plastic collectible containers: “There’s garbage on the floor after the party. Collected from the edge of a love story outside Madison Square Garden, as close to Taylor & Travis’ big day as you could have gotten without an invite. This is the debut of Pocket Garbage, so you can carry a piece of the greatest day of your… I mean, their lives, wherever you go.”

Prices ranged from $25-$100.

Pop tabs, pieces of ribbon, and even a lonely air pod were up for grabs for the obsessive Swiftie fan.

It seems English poet, Thomas Tusser, was spot on: “A fool and his money are soon parted.”

I am thinking that Jesus would have done things differently on the streets of New York.

His investment would have been in meals for the homeless, words of encouragement for the disheartened, and a loving hug for those poor, naïve people who weren’t invited to this extravagant wedding and then resorted to buying the garbage left behind.

Let’s make wise use of our money by investing it in the lives of those around us and leave the Pocket Garbage behind.
