Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A 41-year-old Chatham man has been charged and a Chatham woman is wanted after a wallet was stolen from a vehicle and its credit cards were used at local businesses.
Chatham-Kent police responded at about 7:37 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, to a theft complaint. The victim’s wallet had been stolen from a vehicle parked in a residential driveway on Thelma Street.
Police determined the stolen credit card was used to make several unauthorized purchases at local businesses. Officers reviewed video surveillance footage from a business, which helped identify two people believed to be responsible.
Later that day, officers located one of them, a Chatham man, while responding to an unrelated call. He was arrested, and a search turned up suspected fentanyl. The substance was seized and sent for further analysis.
The man is charged with two counts each of theft of a credit card, possession of a credit card, unauthorized use of a credit card and fraud under $5,000, along with one count of possession of a controlled substance. He was held at police headquarters pending a bail hearing.
A Chatham woman has also been identified and faces the same four sets of charges. Police say she remains outstanding and they are continuing efforts to find her.
