The Chatham-Kent Police Service has suspended its partnership with Crime Stoppers and launched its own tip line after a data breach affecting Crime Stoppers programs across Canada.
Police say they recognize the concern for people who previously gave information expecting anonymity, and that protecting the privacy and safety of those who come forward is essential to public trust.
The tip line is 1-888-236-0993. Police say it is not monitored 24 hours a day. It connects callers directly with police, and while every effort will be made to protect privacy, anonymity cannot be guaranteed. Police say it can be used to report crimes, suspicious activity, wanted people, drug trafficking, property offences or other community safety concerns.
For emergencies or crimes in progress, people should call 911. For non-emergencies, residents can call the communications centre at 519-352-1234 ext. 9 or the front desk officer at 519-352-1234 ext. 0.
