Volunteers, students plant 270 trees in four Wallaceburg parks in four hours

Volunteers, students and community partners planted 270 trees in four Wallaceburg parks in four hours on Friday, Oct. 23.

The planting took place at Thompson Park, MacDonald Park, Optimist Park and Dauw Park. NatureCK, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, Enbridge Gas, Greenfield Global Chatham, UCC High School and WDSS High School took part. Thompson Park was the largest site, with community volunteers, while students planted at the others.

NatureCK project chair Mark Gagner led the planning and coordination. Funding and support came from the conservation authority, NatureCK, Enbridge Gas and Greenfield Global Chatham, along with funding and donations through the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and a TogetherCK grant. The municipality and other local supporters also helped.

Organizers say the trees could eventually provide shade, food and shelter for wildlife, and greener places for families to gather.
