Lancers Scare Hunger food drive collects 22 skids for Chatham Outreach for Hunger

The 19th annual Lancers Scare Hunger food drive collected 22 skids of food for Chatham Outreach for Hunger, surpassing last year’s total.

On the evening of Thursday, Oct. 29, Ursuline College Chatham students, staff and parent volunteers covered 60 routes across Chatham collecting non-perishable items left on porches. Donations filled the school’s foyer and lined its hallways. VanHoof Siding transported four truckloads to the food bank on Friday morning.

“I am continually inspired by the generosity of our community and by the students, staff and parent volunteers who give their time and energy to make this event a success year after year,” said Lisa Harnarine, the school’s principal. “A special thank you to our amazing student leaders from UCC Cares, whose dedication and leadership bring this wonderful initiative to life.”

Brenda LeClair, executive director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger, said the drive was an outstanding success.

“The change in date, and even the rain did not keep the students and the community from responding,” LeClair said. “Twenty-two skids in total were collected and will be distributed to many families facing food insecurity in Chatham-Kent. Thank you to everyone who responded so generously and especially to the students who made it happen.”

The drive is the food bank’s biggest of the year. It was founded in 2007 by Ursuline College teacher Chris Gutteridge, who died in 2019.
