Walpole Island First Nation seeks members for language and culture, recreation and youth committees

Walpole Island First Nation’s chief and council is issuing a second call for community members to serve on standing committees for the 2026-2028 council term.

Applicants are being sought for the Language and Culture Committee and the Recreation and Youth Committee. The council says the committees give community members a chance to take part in decision-making that affects the community. They oversee program development, develop and recommend policies, procedures and protocols, and help provide accountability for program goals.

The Language and Culture Committee will support and develop initiatives and make recommendations to increase the number of Anishinaabemowin learners at all stages, and create safe spaces for learners to take part in ceremonial protocols, cultural activities and practices. Council members Charlene Altiman and Sharon Elaine Coyle hold its council portfolio.

The Recreation and Youth Committee works with the Youth Council, Recreation, BYF and the Sports Complex to make sure youth voices are heard, and advises on recreational programming, policy, planning and operations. Council members Larissa Wrightman and Trenton Soney hold its portfolio.

Applicants must be members of Walpole Island First Nation over the age of 18. They must be committed to promoting the committee’s area, have expertise in the program area and be interested in involving people in planning effective programs. Members must sign an oath of confidentiality and a code of conduct. Committee members do not supervise staff. Most committees meet monthly.

Applications can be emailed or dropped off at the Governance Building front desk. The flyer asks that completed forms be returned to the administrative receptionist at the Naaknigewgamig Governance Building. Digital copies of the application are available, below:
