Smoke alarms save lives ā€“ this is the message from Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services following a tragic fire in Brampton last week that left three people dead and a little girl seriously injured.

Fire Paramedic Chief Ken Stuebing is urging CK residents to request a CHiRP Home Safety Check.

ā€œMany fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep, so early warning is crucial to survival,ā€ Stuebing said in a press release.

ā€œJust as important as having working alarms is making sure everyone in your home knows exactly what to do to escape before a fire occurs. We want to make sure your home is protected and everyone knows how to safely get out.ā€

CKFES crews visit homes every day to complete CHiRP Home Safety Checks.

ā€œI recommend it to everyone in the community; itā€™s free, easy and it took less than 10 minutes,ā€ said Chatham resident, Cherylynn Parry.

ā€œFire crews checked my alarms, answered my questions and chatted with me about home safety.ā€
