Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre

Fall is in full swing and so are activities at the Centre! Because we have so much going on, we wanted to make sure that no one has missed the many new programs and activities we have coming up! Read on to see what is happening at the WAAC!

2023 Memberships now on sale

The Wallaceburg Adult Activity Centre is pleased to announce that memberships for 2023 are now available!  We are pleased to announce that, despite rising costs, we are able to offer memberships at the same rate as last year! The cost for new members is $45 for the year. Current members who renew prior to December 31st can receive a $5 discount, so renewals are only $40!

Membership at the WAAC gets you first access to register for classes, trips, workshops, etc. as well as member rates for all programs and activities!

Member Appreciation Day

We are currently planning our Membership Appreciation Day but are still working out the details. Stay tuned for more soon!

Christmas Gathering – Dec 8

Because of our post-COVID membership numbers, and the uncertainty caused by such a huge shift, we are not holding our traditional Christmas Dinner at the UAW Hall. Instead, we will be holding a Christmas Mingle and Jingle evening at the WAAC itself on December 8th. Our Ad Hoc Committee is working on the logistics and more information will follow shortly.

Stratford Festival Chicago Bus Trip

Registration for the bus trip to see Chicago at the Stratford Festival on Thursday, October 27th ends tomorrow. The cost is $175 for members, $195 for non-members. The trip includes transportation, matinee performance of the award-winning musical Chicago, and dinner, as well as time for shopping/exploring Stratford. For those who have already registered, a reminder that the balance of the trip is now due.

Fall/Halloween/Christmas Signs Craft Workshop

There is still time to sign up for the Signs Workshop this Saturday, October 22nd from 1-3pm. The cost of the workshop is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Come in and make a sign to liven up your home using our Cricut Cutting Machines. All supplies are included.

Design Your Own T-Shirt or Tote Craft Workshop

Have you ever seen a cute saying on a shirt and wanted to know how to get one of your own? Or do you have a saying that you have always wanted on a tote bag, but can’t find exactly what you are looking for? We have great news for you! You can join Victoria on Saturday, November 12th from 1 to 3 and learn how you can make your own, using the Cricut Cutting Machine and special heat-transfer vinyl to bring your ideas to life! Call or email to register! Cost is $10 per person for members or $15 for non-members. All materials will be included. Just make sure to let us know if you prefer to make a shirt or a tote bag (and size if you opt for a shirt!) when you register. This would make a great gift for a loved one for Christmas!

Sewing Classes

Join us for 4 weeks in November for a series of sewing classes! Learn how to read a pattern, use a machine, the proper way to work with fabric, and all the little tips and tricks that take homemade to the next level. Join Helga every Monday starting November 7th as she guides you through the lost art of sewing. Week 1 will focus on the basics and weeks 2, 3 & 4 will delve deeper into the ins and outs, while completing a new project each week. Call or email to sign up for our 4-week session. You can bring your own sewing machine or use one of ours. Please note that this workshop will be held in the Boardroom upstairs, which requires using stairs to access the room. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Crafternoon Drop-In Days

Did you know that we have started crafting again at the WAAC? Every Friday we hold drop-in crafting time. You can bring in your own project or join us for a preplanned project. In November, we have dates for diamond painting, candle making, and card making! So stop by for a couple of hours (Fridays 1:30-3:30) and let those creative juices flow!

Painting Classes

There is still time to register for Marlene Rabideau’s Painting Class on Saturday, October 29th at 11:30. Marlene has been teaching painting at the Centre for many years now. Her classes were among our most popular prior to COVID and now she is back! For $50 (members) or $60.00 (non-members), you can learn from a Bob Ross Certified Instructor and bring a beautiful creation of your own home with you!

Book Club

The WAAC has started a Book Club! The book club will be meeting once a month to discuss the novel of the month. This group will be led by our Program Assistant, Raini Chauvin, who will ask questions meant to provide a deeper insight into the book and to lead group discussions surrounding the novel. There are copies of this month’s book, Still Life by Louise Penny available in the office. The group meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm.

iPads available for use

Did you know that the WAAC has several iPads and Android Tablets on site for members to use? You can ask at the office to borrow a tablet/iPad while you are on site to check your emails, browse your social media accounts, or read the news.

Key Fobs

We know that you want to take care of your health and work out. We also know that sometimes your life doesn’t let you do that from nine to five (well, 8:30 to 4). If you like to work out, but the regular hours at the WAAC don’t work with your schedule, we have you covered!  For a fully refundable $10 deposit, you can get a key fob that will allow you to access the WAAC to work out anytime between 5am and midnight! For more details, email, call, or stop in at the office.

Debit/Credit

The WAAC is happy to announce that we are now able to accept debit and credit card payments in the office!  We know that fewer and fewer people are carrying cash, especially post-pandemic, so we have worked to get additional options for you to purchase services at the WAAC. We will still be accepting cash, cheques, and e-transfers as well, but are thrilled to expand our payment methods for your convenience. Please note that the debit/credit system does not extend to Sue’s Kitchen, which will continue to be cash-based.

Cribbage 55+ Games

The CK 55+ Games are starting soon and the WAAC will be hosting Cribbage on Monday, November 7th at 1pm. Anyone wishing to register for any of the 55+ Games activities can contact the Centre for more information. The 55+ Games schedule is attached to this email.

Yoga

We have been looking for a Yoga Instructor for a while now, but have not had any luck, so we are trying something new in November. Yoga Instructor Annie Lukacsovics will Zoom into our exercise room and guide a group of participants through yoga class from afar! So join your friend in person and Annie online on Fridays from 11:10-12:00 and get stretching! This will be a trial run to see if there is enough interest to continue distance-instructed class. Call for additional information.

Exercise Classes

There is still room in Mikki’s Monday VON class for 3 more people. If you would like to sign up, please contact the office as soon as possible. Once we hit 15 participants, registration for the class closes. There is still room in Dana’s Fit class (Tuesdays 10-11) and Chair Fit (Tuesdays 3-4), Karen’s Line Dancing (Thursdays 10:45-11:45), and Victoria’s Senior Hip Hop Class (Saturdays 11-12).

Pickleball

Did you know that Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North American? The WAAC continues to hold Pickleball at the new, lower price of $3 per day. Games are held on Wednesdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm and Thursdays from 1:00-4:00pm at the Christian Reformed Church on Bruinsma. Pre-registration and prepayment are required.

Don’t forget that our regular programs, including Cards, Pool, Wii Games, Karaoke, Trivia, and Choir are all continuing on the same schedule as before! Come on down and try something new at the WAAC! Check out ALL of the great activities on our calendar when we release it later this week!
