New book sheds light on struggles with stroke recovery

In a riveting exploration of the human spirit’s resilience and a family’s dedication, Frontiers: The Journey of Two Surgeons Through Stroke, authored by local surgeons Drs. Siva Murugappan and Prema Samy, is now available for sale.

This compelling book delves into the poignant and often challenging experiences faced by stroke survivors, offering a unique perspective from a surgeon who has not only treated, but personally triumphed, over the devastating effects of a stroke, officials with the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation say.

Dr. Siva Murugappan, a well-known Chatham-Kent surgeon with over 20 years of experience, and his wife, Dr. Prema Samy, an Otolaryngologist surgeon, draw on their expertise and personal encounter with stroke, to guide readers through a profound narrative of hope, recovery, and the unwavering determination to reclaim life after a debilitating medical event.

Frontiers skillfully combines medical knowledge with heartfelt storytelling, providing readers with invaluable insights into stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Key highlights of Frontiers: The Journey of Two Surgeons Through Stroke include:

– Personal Journey, Professional Insight: Dr. Siva Murugappan and Dr. Prema Samy, married for 30 years, share their personal struggle with stroke, offering readers a unique perspective on the challenges faced as both a patient and caregiver, and medical professionals, trying to negotiate the hurdles back to practice.

– Inspirational Story: Through a real-life account of surviving a stroke, readers gain a deeper understanding of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of a supportive community during the recovery process.

“We wanted to write about our story. In 2017, our lives changed. My husband, a very busy and dedicated surgeon in the community, was in the hospital seeing a patient,” said Dr. Prema Samy, wife to Dr. Murugappan, in a media release.

“The staff noticed he was unsteady and had facial weakness and immediately realized he was having a stroke. From this moment on, our lives were never the same. Frontiers is our story of perseverance and resiliency,” said Dr. Murugappan, in a media release.

“We are both surgeons in our community and the stroke changed our lives forever. Our story highlights our personal struggles with the effects of stroke, but also the challenges a surgeon faces when trying to get back to practice. This story is a testament to who we are as a family, but also the courage and determination it takes to stay on course.”
