Just being nice

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

There is a trend these days where we are encouraged to be more kind.

Everyone from rock stars to sports celebrities are preaching this positive message.

However, it is one thing to preach it, and another to carry it out.

Hebrews 10:24 in the Amplified Version of the Bible says this: “And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities.”

There is a lady in my neighbourhood who has taken such advice to heart.

A while back on garbage day she waited for the truck to come and empty everyone’s can.

Then, without hesitation, she went out and dragged a bunch of these cans back to their spots before anyone knew about it.

I got home for lunch and praised my wife for putting our can back while I was at the church office, only to find out that she hadn’t done it.

This was a great gesture, which everyone appreciated, but it got even better.

Others started trying to beat her to it, outdoing one another in this weekly act of kindness.

It almost became like some sort of game.

I’m the competitive type so this was right up my alley.

But guess what?

I have trouble beating out the others to get the job done.

Most weeks someone, either this kind lady or someone else, gets the job done first.

We have even had a few laughs over this.

Let me encourage you to find ways to be a blessing to others through “helpful deeds and noble activities.”

It’s not something you’ll regret, and it will bring a smile to our Saviour’s face!
