This is why, although it is very emotional, I now proudly wear a red shirt.
In 1987, the Foundation introduced a special type of supporter: a Terry’s Team Member (TTM). This person is anyone who has a personal diagnosis of cancer; is at any stage of his or her treatment or recovery; and is a participant in the Terry Fox Run. In the early years of the TTM initiative, many Run sites struggled to find one person who would participate as a Terry’s Team Member. Through the years, the idea of a “sea of red shirts” on Run Day has continued to grow and symbolizes that cancer research works! Seeing Terry’s Team Members wearing their special red “Terry’s Team” shirts before and on Run Day is truly inspiring.
There is probably only one disease that everyone can say they know of someone, or themselves have or has had it: this being cancer. In my life, especially with owning a business in Wallaceburg, I have known many people who have been touched by cancer. In my personal life and in Moira’s, we have each had a parent pass from cancer and recently, 3 years ago, I lost my sister to AML (acute myelocytic leukemia). Now I can say not only do I participate and organize for others but also because I too have cancer. This is poignant and very humbling.
