Queens Line and Merlin Road intersection improvements set to begin

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is set to commence work on the Queens Line and Merlin Road Intersection Improvements.

This project includes the construction of a single lane roundabout and the rehabilitation of the Queens Line Bridge just west of the intersection over Government Drain No. 1.

The Municipality has retained contractor Huron Construction to complete this project.

Huron Construction is tentatively scheduled to mobilize equipment and install all required traffic control signage and detour route information starting the week of October 14, 2024.

The first phase of this project includes the construction and realignment of Merlin Road north and south of Queens Line. During this phase of work, a full closure of Merlin Road from Gleeson Line to McDougall Line is required.

This road closure is scheduled to commence on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Queens Line will remain open during this phase of work; however motorists may see some delays with the potential for short term lane reductions on Queens Line during this work.

Access to properties along Merlin Road will be maintained.

The second phase of the project includes the rehabilitation of the bridge just west of the intersection, realignment of Queens Line, and the final construction of the roundabout including the centre island, installation of new streetlights at the intersection, and landscaping work.

This work is tentatively scheduled to begin in February 2025 and be completed by July 2025.

“We are working towards developing safer roadways throughout Chatham-Kent, and this project will provide much needed safety improvements at this intersection,” says Marissa Mascaro, Director, Engineering, in a media release.

“Roundabouts have been found to reduce the frequency and severity of types of collisions experienced at an intersection.”

Motorists are advised to follow construction detour signage at all times as the dates of the closures may change as work progresses.

Access to all properties will be maintained throughout the project.

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions, but there may be some inconvenience during work. The Municipality of Chatham-Kent thanks motorists for their patience during this important infrastructure work, Municipal officials added.
