In recognition of Wallaceburg’s 150th anniversary this year, the Wallaceburg & District Museum has launched a new feature on social media: ‘150 Facts, for 150 Years’.
Here is one of their recent posts:
Skimming through the “Wallaceburg Faces and Places” book by Alan Mann, I came across this picture of Police Chief Charles Warwick. It caught my eye as it looked like a typical scene from a detective story from the 1930s!
Charles Warwick was born 1871 and came to Canada in 1907. He is quite the war hero and received medals for his service during both wars, which are housed in our collection.
He was appointed Chief of Police in 1935.
He had served in the Boer War, and then in WWI where he was medically discharged.
Undeterred, he tried, unsuccessfully due to his age, to sign up to fight in World War II.
Unsurprising, as he was in his late 60’s by then!
He died in 1955 at the age of 84.
