Chatham man charged after theft, struggle with police

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Chatham-Kent police arrested a 49-year-old Chatham man following a reported theft at a retail store on St. Clair Street Thursday night.

Police say the man fled the scene on a bicycle with a cart full of stolen merchandise. Officers located the suspect nearby, and a brief struggle occurred before he was arrested.

He is charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property under $5,000, and assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest. He was released with a court date scheduled for Aug. 25.
