OPP officials allege: The Essex County Ontario Provincial Police is warning the public about a scam involving fraudulent text messages that appear to be from ServiceOntario.
The texts often claim to involve urgent matters such as traffic ticket payments and may look official. Police say these messages are designed to steal personal or financial information.
Residents are advised not to click on any links or download attachments. ServiceOntario does not send traffic violation notices by text — official notifications are sent by mail only.
The scam has been reported more frequently in the last 48 hours. Essex OPP urge residents to warn family and friends to help prevent further victimization.
