OPP urges safe driving ahead of Civic Day long weekend

As one of the busiest travel weekends of the year approaches, the Ontario Provincial Police is reminding drivers to follow the rules of the road — including Ontario’s Move Over law — to help ensure a safe Civic Day long weekend.

The Move Over law requires motorists to slow down and, when possible, move over a lane when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. In 2024, the OPP laid nearly 2,000 charges against drivers who failed to comply.

“Safe driving includes paying attention to what’s happening on the roadside,” police said in a release, noting the law helps protect emergency personnel assisting motorists and working at the roadside.

In addition to Move Over enforcement, officers across the province will be focused on distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and seatbelt use throughout the long weekend. The OPP will also patrol waterways and trails, urging the public to prioritize safety while boating and off-roading.

As of July 27, 182 people have died in road collisions in Ontario this year, along with eight fatalities in marine incidents and eight more in off-road vehicle crashes.
