A peaceful protest took place Sunday, Aug. 10, in Dresden, where residents formed a human chain along the main road to voice opposition to Bill 5 and the proposed expansion of the Dresden Waste Disposal Site.
The demonstration stretched from Irish School Road to St. George Street, drawing attention to what organizers described as threats to local farmland and waterways.
The event was organized by Angie Mills-Richards, a Dresden resident who helped rally support through social media and community outreach. Participants linked arms in a show of solidarity, creating what organizers called a powerful symbol of unity against environmental harm and government overreach.
“This was a grassroots movement organized by community members who care deeply about preserving the land and waterways for future generations,” Mills-Richards said in a post promoting the event. “We stood side by side to protect what matters most — our farmland, our water, our children’s future.”
Two of the organizers, Jodi-Lynn Janess and Wendy Vercauteren, spoke with us about the motivation behind the protest.
They emphasized the importance of community involvement and expressed concern over the long-term impact of the proposed landfill expansion.
Both said they hoped the demonstration would send a clear message to decision-makers and inspire others to take action.
