Traits of a fool

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

When it comes to the subject of foolishness, the Bible has much to say and ample warning to avoid it.

I am not talking about the stand-up routines of today’s comedians.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines foolishness as “the quality of being unwise, stupid, or not showing good judgement.”

Related to these negative traits are two actions that foolish people demonstrate.

Proverbs 26:12 reveals the first one: “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”

The second is found in Proverbs 29:20: “Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”

There you have it, friends.

Two key characteristics of someone who is foolish are being right in your own eyes and shooting your mouth off in quick reaction before you have all the facts.

No doubt most of us have struggled in at least one of these areas, if not both.

The Bible is actually even more direct because it says that even a fool is better off if he refrains from these two unwise life choices.

If you are someone who struggles in either of these two areas, there is hope for you. Let me give you two suggestions.

First, you can ask a good friend to be brutally honest with you and point out when you are guilty of airing a self-righteous opinion or jumping to conclusions with your mouth.

The other suggestion is to pray and ask God to help you get victory in these areas.

He wants the best for us and can help us overcome those things that lead to foolishness.
