Man charged after stolen bicycle recovered in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: A man is facing charges after police recovered a stolen bicycle and allegedly found him in possession of a prohibited weapon.

On Feb. 17, 2026, at about 8:40 a.m., a member of the Chatham-Kent Police Service received a report of a stolen bicycle from a Chatham resident.

At approximately 10:46 a.m., an officer observed a man riding a bicycle matching the description eastbound on Wellington Street and initiated a traffic stop. Police confirmed the bicycle had been reported stolen and returned it to the owner.

The accused was charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Further investigation determined the man was in breach of his court-ordered release conditions by being in possession of a knife, identified as a prohibited weapon. He was additionally charged with failure to comply with a release order.

The accused was transported to the South West Detention Centre, where he remains remanded in custody until a video court appearance scheduled for Feb. 27, 2026.
