The supervisor of the Walpole Island Police Service has been placed on paid administrative leave while an independent review is conducted into concerns related to the service.
In a statement dated March 3, Walpole Island First Nation Chief and Council said the action follows concerns raised about administrative and operational matters within the police service.
“Walpole Island First Nation Chief and Council wish to inform community members that the current Supervisor of the Walpole Island Police Service has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an independent review,” the statement said.
Chief and Council said the review will be conducted independently to ensure the process remains fair and impartial.
“This step follows concerns raised regarding administrative and operational matters within the Walpole Island Police Service. The review will be conducted independently to ensure a fair and impartial process,” the statement said.
The leadership said the decision was made to protect the integrity of the review and maintain public confidence.
“Chief and Council have a responsibility to ensure that our policing services operate with transparency, accountability, and in the best interests of the community. This decision has been made to protect the integrity of the review process and to maintain public confidence during this period,” the statement said.
Officials said policing services on Walpole Island will continue during the review.
“Policing services will continue during this time, and further updates will be shared as appropriate. No further information will be shared regarding the independent review until its conclusion,” the statement said.
Chief and Council also emphasized their commitment to maintaining a police service that serves the community with integrity.
“Chief and Council remain committed to strengthening and supporting a police service that serves our community with integrity and respect,” the statement said.
