Chatham-Kent council has approved a motion calling for a report on enhanced security measures at the L.O. Stonehouse Pedestrian Bridge in Wallaceburg, after the structure was vandalized for the second time this year.
The motion, brought forward by Wallaceburg Councillor Carmen McGregor, noted that the vandalism resulted in significant damage to the electrical infrastructure that operates the bridge, rendering the lift span inoperable. The motion also noted that repeated acts of vandalism against critical municipal infrastructure result in increased costs to taxpayers, disruption to public access, and impacts to community events and services.
Council approved the motion as amended, directing that the resulting report include funding sources for potential security enhancements as well as an estimated timeline for returning to council for further consideration and direction.
The motion was approved at council’s August 10 meeting.
