Together is better

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Back in June and July of this year our country, along with the United States and Mexico, hosted the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, soccer’s biggest event every 4 years.

Personally, I could barely tear myself away from the daily coverage of these games.

These teams were so exciting to watch, each one going through a grueling process to qualify for this elite tournament.

There were so many things I liked as I watched the games, but one thing in particular stands out to me.

It was the incredible sense of teamwork.

11 players aside, flowing together as one, and moving the ball around carefully between teammates.

There was a precious unity that made the better teams look invincible.

It reminded me of the promise of blessing from the Lord when His people also walk together in unity.

Psalm 133 says this: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard, coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, coming down upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commanded the blessing – life forever.”

Rugged individualism has long been the mantra of western civilization, but we are better when we work together.

Christianity is also a team sport.

God has called us to work together, to combine our talents and gifts, to achieve a greater result.

Jesus called 12 men to work together, whom He trained and then sent out to spread His message to the world.

Even the Lone Ranger had Taunto!

Soccer, or football as it is known internationally, is called the ‘beautiful game.’

When God’s people endeavour to cooperate and work together in unity, it’s also something beautiful.
