St. Clair Catholic board donates surplus furniture and books to Canadian Food for Children

Surplus furniture and books from St. Clair Catholic District School Board schools are being donated to Canadian Food for Children – Chatham-Kent, which will ship them to schools in Honduras.

The donation includes desks, chairs and books.

“It is part of our Catholic identity to care for one another and help when we are in a position to give back,” said Lisa Demers, the board’s CEO and CEdO. “We are grateful these educational resources will find a new purpose in classrooms around the world, supporting students and enhancing their learning environments.”

The Chatham-Kent chapter was formed in 1997 and has collected and sent food, clothing, medical and school supplies and other items to a main warehouse in Mississauga. From there, the goods are loaded into shipping containers and trucked to Halifax for shipment to Africa, and to the Port of Miami for shipment to Central and South America.

Volunteers have supported missions in countries including Tanzania, Sierra Leone, El Salvador and Zambia.

Dr. Andrew Simone of Toronto and his wife, Joan, founded Canadian Food for Children in 1981 in response to a request from Mother Teresa.
