Submissions are being sought in Wallaceburg, Dresden and all over Chatham-Kent, for a time capsule that is set to be locked away for 100 years.
A time capsule crypt was placed in the Old Mausoleum at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Chatham way back in 1914.
Fast forward to October 2014 and the contents was revealed to the public. As directed by the inscription on the crypt door, a local committee is updating the records and resealing the crypt to be opened again in another 100 years.
Deanna Provost-Bullard, education coordinator at the Chatham-Kent Museum, said they are reaching out to the public in order to fill the time capsule.
“It can be groups or people from the public,” Provost-Bullard told the Sydenham Current. “Groups can maybe write down their club or groups history. The public can submit something that captures what life was like in 2014.”
The committee has been meeting for a year to develop plans and gather contributions for the 2014 version of the time capsule.
Provost-Bullard said they are including items from Wallaceburg, Dresden and all over Chatham-Kent.
“That is who we are now… Chatham-Kent,” she said. “We want to show what life was like across our whole community. In another 100 years, it might be completely different.”
The committee is asking for your help to fill the time capsule.
Provost-Bullard said they are looking for items that were important to people in 2014, items that represented daily life and they are looking for how people would describe Chatham-Kent in 2014 for someone from the future.
“We’re thinking on placing an iPod or a smart phone in there,” she said.
Provost-Bullard said the C-K Museum is looking to go out to schools in Chatham-Kent as well, to capture the thoughts of children in the community.
Proposed ideas, written material, items, or photos can be submitted to the committee for review and to possibly be included in the crypt.
The time capsule crypt will be sealed in the fall of 2015.
For printed or handwritten material, black ink on standard 8½”X11” paper is preferred and, for photographs, black and white is preferred.
Deadline for submissions is June 15th, 2015.
Anyone can send their contributions to the Chatham-Kent Museum, 75 William St. N, Chatham, N7M 4L4 attention Stephanie Saunders.
