Poll results: Do you plan on keeping your new garbage tote?

progressive waste solutions garbage totes

It appears the majority of people in Wallaceburg plan on sending their garbage tote back.

A new garbage tote system started this past week in Wallaceburg.

Large tote bins started being delivered to Wallaceburg homes as part of a trial project, which also began in Tilbury a few weeks ago by Progressive Waste Solutions.

Some people in the community are happy with the program, while others are not.

  1. People don’t like change or being told to use the bins. Using these bins will cut jobs and will cost home owners money to buy. However picking up garbage every week flying down the street because animals have gotten into the bags and a lot of people for some reason won’ t purchase garbage pails, I will support the idea for that reason alone. The other plus is it won’t attract the crows and prevent the smells in the summer. You will have less clutter in your yard as well. These bins will help. The bins will help the sanitation people save their backs from lifting. I think the idea is sound but the bins should be free and I think then the program would go over better.

  2. I was under the impression that the totes are “free”….included in taxes. If the project fails, and the tote is not returned, you are responsible for the cost.
That being said, I believe that the program is a good one. Containing the garbage in a large bin eliminates the pile of bags (that would exceed the limit) from being at curbside and torn to bits by racoons, dogs or crows. What if Wallaceburg became free of litter? Do you think it can happen?
I am in favour of the bins as long as the cost of this item is not born by the homeowner.

  3. No no & no. It’s ridiculous we are being forced to accept a bin then pay for it. Pay a lot for it. I’m a single mom with more important purchases to make with $75 – such as pay my utility bills which are ridiculously high.

  4. Another brain storm by our municipality. First they cut back our bag limit to 3, then they push these bins on us. Sorry to say they don’t hold 3 bags inside as I tried. I use XL garbage bags because of the recent cutbacks. Then the seniors on my street could barely push these empty “dumpsters” down there driveway. When I aproched the truck dropping them off i said “no thanks” he replied “I already scanned it you have to take it”? Really?? I explained to him I don’t want it or the others at out other properties. He explained that there $75 and will be more after there returned. He also explained to me they will eventually become mandatory? Really? Once again the people of this town have no choice as the municipality has made “our” decision for us. Not happy!!

  5. We were told today by the person dropping it off that we had to take them at least for the 45 day trial period. He also said we should reconsider keeping them as we will eventually be going to garbage pickup every two weeks. Interesting…makes you wonder if that is going to happen.

  6. This is not a decision from the municipality This is so the garbage company only needs to have one person to drive truck and pick up garbage. These pails hook to the truck and don’t need to be lifted by a person.

  7. My thoughts are if there is a reduction in workers that savings should be passed on to the customers namely us. It seems to me that someone is going to make a pile of money selling these and it ain’t going to be the customers. The cost should be around $30 minimum and I would have to think about that. I have a perfectly good garbage pail that holds 2 bags of garbage and that is lots for my wife and I. I’ll continue to use my own garbage pail thank you.

  8. We need an open discussion on the by-law governing the use of these large garbage carts… then perhaps some of you “Pro Cart” folks might re-consider… Are you prepared to shovel the snow away from your street’s curb before 7:00 a.m. so that you can place the cart as the law requires? I’m sure you won’t mind helping your senior-citizen neighbour push the monster through the snow to get it placed ‘just so’… There’s much more to these carts than meets the eye folks… Tomorrow morning my garbage bags will be placed as I’ve always done… and the big blue bin will be right beside them…. I’ll wait for the sanitation police to deliver my summons… ordering me to put it to use.
