Today marks a special day in the Wallaceburg community.
This afternoon, at 2 p.m. at our local cemetery, there will be a gathering of people holding a service to commemorate those who served our country in years past as men and women of uniform.
It is Decoration Day.
Officially, we decorate the graves of those who have fought for our country and have now passed on.
In recent years the service has been ill-attended, whether due to the hot, early summer sun, or just plain busyness in peoples’ lives.
Either way, the ceremony holds value because it causes us to reflect and appreciate those who have made sacrifices on our behalf.
Do you do that for the people in your life?
I have found that if I am not intentional about remembering and thanking the people in my life who make a difference, than I am apt to forget them altogether.
It’s not that I do this deliberately, but without markers along life’s way the inevitable tyranny of routine can easily choke out celebrations of gratitude.
Decoration Day helps me remember those I have never met but who contributed to the comfortable level of living I now enjoy.
There are others in my life who also need such attention, and I don’t want them to be left to the wayside.
For this reason I keep a stash of cards handy to send out from time to time, you know, to just let people know they are appreciated.
I think I need to send a few this week.
